Project Name: 1:10th scale model, Alstom X'Trapolis UK commuter train.
Processes Used: SLA, SLS, CNC, Vacuum Casting, Workshop.
CA Models utilised all of its in-house processes, skills and techniques for the interior and exterior model of the lead car and part trailing car of the innovative new electric commuter train from Alstom. With a tight, fixed deadline the model was delivered to the Saatchi Gallery in London for viewing.
The train shell was constructed using 5 Axis CNC machined formers. A release agent, waxing and high polish were applied to the formers and then were coated in a polyester gel. The thickness was made up of layers of fine glass-fibre and polyester resin. For strength, carbon fibre tape was used in strips along the length between the layers.
SLA was used to build the interior panels, in Accura 25 which had strength and flexibility which was important for the assembly stage of the job. Hand finished in the workshop, meant there was a smooth surface finish to the panels.
SLS parts were made for the bogeys, using PA Nylon which provided robust structural components for the model.
For the seats that were assembled inside the train, CA utilised its Vacuum Casting capabilities to create both blue and white Polyurethane based seats which were then bonded together for visual affect. Also the sheer quantity of 60 seats in total meant that using this process was a more economic solution.
The model was finished and assembled using many processes to achieve the highest quality. Finally, electrics and lighting were installed to the interior of the model, which further enhanced the visual details.
